RECAP: Oct. 21st

I hope you were there!!!

The good folks at Metal Assault always tell us to “arrive early and stay late”. Saturday night was why.

I don’t get over to the east side that often, especially for the late gigs. But, when you pack so much original talent into one acoustically delicious room, I’ll get out the GPS and get across town.  I already knew I’d be in heaven seeing Alien Satan, Furiosa and Monte Pittman.  Again, SO much talent, SO much I already love! And then, Thunder Gut! This is why you’ve gotta show up early.  You may just find a new favorite!!

This was my first visit to The Hi Hat, and I instantly fell smitten with the room.  Brick walls, wood beamed ceiling, fabric hung to soften it all – the space provided such great texture for the varied sound experience.

Again, I was glad to arrive early, because I got to see the guys from Thunder Gut for the first time!  I was instantly interested and reminded of other bands I’d love to see on the same bill with them.  I picked up a cd, which has already found its way into my kitchen rotation – their gritty groove pairs perfectly with dark ale and Sunday soup making. Pass me another…

Thunder Gut

Next up was Alien Satan. This was my second time seeing them. I was hooked the first time, and now, the set feels even more locked in and comfortable. They brought the heavy, with shred to spare!! I’m really digging hearing Eli Santana on vocals, while also providing such intensely boisterous leads on guitar… I think I burned a few thousand calories just watching! I hope to see lots more live dates for these guys, but in the meantime, I can still get another Eli/Tyler fix later this week, with Jill Janus and Huntress… stay tuned!

Alien Satan

Aaah, the Ghoulishness. Furiosa brought it! Once some lighting issues were resolved, a Burtonesque vibe crept through the room to the voracious beat of Jonah Nimoy’s imagination. Now I REALLY wanna have a Halloween party!!  Always tight, always loaded with melodic/harmonic details that give me goosebumps – always a favorite.   The live act is always evolving too, and this version has it completely on point, in the pocket and on their way into my personal soundtrack! I was stoked to get a promo copy of their impending debut album, “Look, Don’t Listen” out 11/3/2017… SO GOOD!! Get it!!

Finally, Monte Pittman took the stage to wow us with his one-man-splendor, regaling us with originals from his  incredibly ample repertoire. OMG. This guy. He’s been in my ear for so much of my life. From Myra Mains, in high school, to Prong – even Maddona! I was over the moon to meet him, hear him and am now floating through the deep end of his solo catalogue – SO MUCH DELICIOUSNESS!! From the thoughtfully dulcet tones of “The Deepest Dark” to his most recent “Inverted Grasp of Balance” (sooo appropriate for this wild Libra season, careening into Scorpio times!), I’m soaking in this masterclass of musical magnificence!!

Monte Pittman

Both Alien Satan and Monte got to pair their work with the lovely and madly talented Jill Janus of Huntress – who I’m excited to see on Wednesday night, at The Viper Room!! C’mon down and help us celebrate Andrew Bansal(of Metal Assault)’s birthday!! The first person to find me there, and whisper (or gently shout, depending on the state of the room) the word  *SCORPIO*  in my LEFT ear, will win a CATYLYTICA T-shirt or tank top*! I’ll be working the merch booth, so come say hi and support local music!!

Now, I’m off to a rehearsal myself!  Until next time,

*T-shirt or tank top will be ordered and mailed to the winner
